The Declaration
We, the undersigned — Christians of the United Kingdom and all people of goodwill — declare the following before God and before our nation:
- Every human being bears the image of God from the moment of fertilisation. There is no point in a human life at which a person is not a person (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 139:13–16).
- Abortion is the intentional killing of an innocent human being, and is therefore a violation of the sixth commandment and of the most basic duty a nation owes its children.
- Since the Abortion Act 1967, and by every later extension, the United Kingdom has withheld the protection of law from children in the womb. We say plainly: this is a national sin, and the shedding of innocent blood defiles a land (Numbers 35:33; Proverbs 6:16–17).
- We therefore call on Parliament and the devolved legislatures to abolish abortion — not to regulate it, not to reduce it at the margins, but to abolish it — by extending the equal protection of the law of homicide to every human being from fertilisation, without exception.
- We reject gradualism. A law that says "not after this week" implies "yes before it". Justice delayed for the youngest of our neighbours is justice denied (Isaiah 1:17; Proverbs 24:11).
- We call the church of Jesus Christ in Britain to repent of her silence, to preach the whole counsel of God, to practise mercy toward mothers and fathers in crisis, and to lead this cause rather than follow it.
- We proclaim mercy as loudly as justice. To every mother and father who has been through abortion: the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses every sin, and full forgiveness is offered to all who repent and believe (1 John 1:7–9). This declaration condemns a practice; the gospel welcomes every person.
Until the law of this land protects every child, we will not be silent.
